Reverse Engineering

Reverse Engineering is a timed, destructive station job that turns matching physical specimens into reconstruction progress toward their underlying design.

It is destructive.Selected specimens are removed from local station storage when the job starts and consumed when analysis completes. You are trading physical technology for permanent design knowledge and engineering experience.

The ticket tells you what the batch is expected to accomplish.

For equipment, all selected copies must be the same base design and the same treated-design identity. The current quote shows specimens committed, fee, duration, reconstruction before/after, whether the batch completes the schematic, and the exact-design, family/subdomain, and broad-discipline engineering experience it will award.

Specimen evidenceCondition and craftsmanship affect how much evidence a physical specimen contributes.
Transferable knowledgeExisting family and discipline experience improves reconstruction of an unknown design.
Design difficultyRarer, more complex, or treated designs require more evidence.
FacilityEquipment analysis requires a docked station with Fabricator service and consumes a facility allocation.
AmmunitionAuthored ammunition can also be reverse-engineered in whole-unit batches from station storage.
HullsPackaged bare hulls use Shipyard service for hull reverse engineering.

Rare technology can become an industrial goal.

A valuable recovered component is not only something to equip or sell. It can become one of the physical examples you sacrifice to learn how to reproduce that design yourself. Once the base schematic is already known, further complete reconstruction thresholds can produce physical schematic copies rather than relearning knowledge you already possess.
