Skills & Attributes

Professional skills exist on both the Captain and Crew. The six core Attributes belong to the Captain and provide a smaller supporting contribution to related Captain skills. Crew development uses its own skills, traits, specialties, service standing, and readiness instead.

Skills map to actual work.

The same professional vocabulary is used across the Captain and Crew, although each contributes through its own progression and readiness state.

Industrial OperationsMining, ice, gas, salvage support, extraction expertise.
EngineeringSystems, repair, shields, extraction support, manufacturing support.
NavigationTravel, exploration, surveying, transit expertise.
PilotingTravel, maneuvering, combat handling.
GunneryWeapon handling and combat execution.
SurveyingExploration, prospecting, scanning.
ScienceScience operations, prospecting, scientific interpretation.
ResearchDurable knowledge, science support, reverse-engineering support.
ManufacturingFabrication quality and production expertise.
RefiningMaterial processing and refinery expertise.
CommandCrew leadership, combat command, large-ship performance.

Attributes support the Captain's professional ratings.

Each Captain skill draws on a small set of related Attributes when the game resolves direct Captain contribution. Endurance is the exception: it primarily belongs to human condition and recovery rather than one proficiency.

CoordinationPrecision and timing. Supports Piloting and Gunnery.
PerceptionAwareness and pattern recognition. Supports Navigation, Piloting, Surveying, and Science.
IntellectTechnical reasoning. Supports Engineering, Science, Research, Manufacturing, and Refining.
EnduranceStamina and tolerance for sustained demanding work, especially condition and recovery.
FocusSustained concentration and procedural discipline. Supports Industrial Operations, Engineering, Navigation, Gunnery, Research, Manufacturing, Refining, and Command.
LeadershipCommand presence and coordination. Supports Industrial Operations and Command, and also contributes to the Captain's separate shipwide leadership effect.

A number matters because of where it is used.

There is no universal best stat. Different activities resolve different professional skills, while the Captain's related Attributes provide supporting competence and current human readiness determines how much of that competence is available right now.
